Roger varian
Location: Newmarket, Suffolk. Roger Varian won three Group 1s in a hugely successful 2023 season, to take his tally of topflight winners to 24, in a career that started in 2011 when he took over the licence from his former boss Michael Jarvis.
In 2017, Roger purchased the historic Carlburg Stables from Clive Brittain and has invested heavily in refurbishing the yard into one of Newmarket’s finest facilities. The dedicated owners room looks out on a vast outdoor arena where Roger’s horses collect to receive instructions before they head out to the gallops, which are all a short walk from this well positioned stable.
Roger has trained two St Leger winners, Kingston Hill and Eldar Eldarov, and 12 Royal Ascot winners. He is no stranger to success overseas having successfully targeted valuable prizes abroad since the start of his career when Nahrain won the Prix de l’Opera (Gr 1) and Flower Bowel International (Gr 1) in his very first season.
Roger is an excellent communicator and has earned a reputation for his patient handling of his horses. In 2022, trained a season-high 140 winners and earned over £3.6 million in prize money. He has bettered that total in 2023 thanks to an emotional victory for King Of Steel in the QIPCO British Champion Stakes, to give Frankie Dettori the perfect sign off to his career in the UK.
