OCTOBER 2023

The first yearling is shown at Highclere’s annual yearling parade

By Harry Herbert

We have just completed the two days of our yearling parades and as always it was such a thrill to show off the new horses and thankfully in glorious sunshine. As always it was a real slog to get round the sales but in Ireland at the Goffs Orby Sale we found some fabulous horses with pedigrees that we were able to afford. I have no doubt that some of these would have made so much more the next week at Tattersalls. We bought five and all are therefore qualified for the Goffs Million worth €1,000,000 over 7f and another new race worth €500,000 to be run over 6f. Only yearlings bought from this Orby Sale are qualified to run.

We paraded thirteen yearlings and all showed themselves off beautifully. Below are some lovely photographs of each of them with a short comment from me and a link to the parade footage with Jake’s commentary. We do have some shares still available so for those of you who haven’t yet committed do take a close look as these are very important yearlings with certainly the best pedigrees that we have ever assembled.

With my best wishes,

Harry Herbert, Chairman

SYNDICATES TO RACE 2024

The Heron Syndicate

Churchill ex Winter Beau (bay colt)

The Heron Syndicate’s very handsome Churchill colt. Bought for €140,000 he is an absolute belter! Andrew Balding will train him and he could not have impressed more on Sunday and Monday. By a top class stallion and out of a half sister to the dam of Classic winner Winter (English and Irish 1,000 Guineas) he oozes class and we do have a share available which should be snapped up!

The Nightingale Syndicate

Blue Point ex Dalkova (bay filly)

The Nightingale’s Blue Point ex Dalkova filly to be trained by George Boughey. Sharp, strong and boasting a fabulous pedigree! She was a steal at €110,000 and her sire, Blue Point is the champion first season sire elect with over 40 winners and four black type winners including recent Group 1 winner Rosallion trained by Richard Hannon. This filly of ours has the best pedigree in the stud book tracing back to Champions Dar Re Mi the dam of Too Darn Hot, another leading first season sire!

The Barn Owl Syndicate

Teofilo ex Ceistiu (bay colt)

The Barn Owl syndicate’s Teofilo colt to be trained by William Haggas. Wow! What an imposing colt he is by a great stallion and from a serious female line. His dam, Ceistiu, is a full sister to the multiple group winning Steip Amach and another half sister has produced group winners Malavath and Knight. This colt is a proper middle distance horse in the making…..Derby dreams!

The Goldfinch Syndicate

Zoustar ex Rich Legacy (chesnut filly)

The Goldfinch Syndicate’s Zoustar filly: a very strong precocious daughter of champion sire Zoustar to be trained by George Boughey. Royal Ascot dreams with this one for sure as she has tremendous strength and ease of movement. George won’t be hanging around with her next spring that’s for sure!

The Teal Syndicate

Ghaiyyath ex Cross My Mind (bay colt)

The Teal Syndicate’s Ghaiyyath colt bought for 130,000 gns from Book 1. By Ghaiyyath the world champion racehorse and highest rated son of Dubawi to retire to stud, this is a very imposing athletic horse who honestly could be anything. Watch him move in the video - one that John Warren was desperate for us to buy! This too could be a Derby prospect bred as he is. There are a few shares still available in him so don’t miss this one whatever you do if that race at Epsom on the first Saturday in June is your dream race to win!

The Wren Syndicate

Australia ex Bodak (bay filly)

The Wren Syndicate’s Australia filly is very special and very well bought by Jake for only 70,000 gns. She has the scope that you would expect from an Australia but she also has plenty of strength. A lovely pedigree too being out of a mare who is a half-sister to the dam of two black type horses including Azure Blue who won the Duke of York Stakes (Gr 2). This filly is out of a winning Kodiac mare with plenty of speed in the pedigree. Charlie Fellowes was thrilled with her - a “must have” as she also has so much residual value.

The Falcon Syndicate

Invincible Spirit ex Policoro (bay filly)

The Falcon Syndicate’s Invincible Spirit filly who is a full-sister to the black type winner, Firebird Song. She is also closely related to the Group 1 winner Territories (Invincible Spirit) who is a successful stallion. This filly is by a top class sire and looks very precocious so, if good enough, she will be aimed at the Royal Meeting!

The Robin Syndicate

Make Believe ex Brassica (bay colt)

The Robin Syndicate’s Make Believe colt was a Jake Warren “Uncle H I’ve found another one” (!) from Book 3. Bought for only 55,000 gns he is a seriously nice colt and he has a pedigree to match his looks. Out of a winning stakes placed daughter of Australia he comes from the family of Dream Of Dreams (G1 Diamond Jubilee and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup) and the page has three champion two year olds on it! James Ferguson has done so well for us with Drama and so I am delighted that he will be training this son of Make Believe who is the sire of world champion Mishriff. At only £7,950 per share he is surely an “add to basket” job!

The Osprey Syndicate

Too Darn Hot ex Galician (bay filly)

The Osprey Syndicate has this fabulous daughter of leading first season sire Too Darn Hot who was very well bought by Jake for only 95,000 gns. She is out of a black type multiple winning daughter of champion sire Redoute’s Choice, the broodmare sire of a staggering 29 Group 1 winners. Richard Hannon was as thrilled as I have ever seen him when he discovered that he was training her at the Parades!

The Swift Syndicate

Wootton Bassett ex Shenanigans (bay colt)

Well this son of Wootton Bassett in the Swift Syndicate is as good a colt as you will see. By one of the leading stallions standing at stud in Europe and out of a multiple black type winning mare, we pushed the boat out to secure him for 240,000 gns. Roger Varian was underbidder and was on the phone immediately asking if he could train him! If this one isn’t any good I will eat my hat - yes another one I can hear you say!!

The Skylark Syndicate

Ghaiyyath ex Soul Searcher (chesnut filly)

We were so impressed with the Ghaiyyaths at the sales. This first season sire, who is a son of the mighty Dubawi, is the highest rated son of his to go to stud and when you think that Dubawi has already produced top sires, Night of Thunder and Too Darn Hot, Ghaiyyath honestly could be anything! This filly is so classy and I don’t think we saw a better mover all sales season. Do take a look at her in the video to see for yourself! She is out of a multiple winning black type daughter of Motivator who is proving to be a very good broodmare sire. Bred to stay a mile and half this very pretty daughter of his has all the credentials to be an Oaks filly down the road.

The Eagle Syndicate

Starspangledbanner ex Albemarle (bay colt)

The Eagle Syndicate’s Starspangledbanner colt is an absolute corker!! This colt is by a seriously good sire who is the sire of our exciting year old filly Soprano who is multiple group placed this season. He comes from a very active family as his half-sister is Lexington Belle has now won two races at two and was placed third in a listed race last time. His dam has also produced Mackaar (rated 90) and is currently four winners from five runners. Take a close look at this fellow - Roger Varian will train him and we were only chatting recently at the Horses In Training Sale in Newmarket about what an exciting prospect he is. Great looks, a fabulous pedigree, lovely ease of movement and that very special “look of eagles”!

The Kingfisher Syndicate

Wootton Bassett ex Il Palazzo (bay filly)

The Kingfisher is out most exclusive syndicate with only 12 shares. We looked long and hard to find the right yearling to put into this syndicate and when we secured this stunning daughter of Wootton Bassett we knew she was the one! Wootton Bassett is the sire of the moment and as such his offspring command huge prices at the sales. This filly is exactly what we are looking for with that strength and quality which he gets in his offspring, something that Galileo also produced. This filly is a half sister to the black type winner Still Standing and the three year old, Mistressofillusion, is now a dual winner and recently won a £25,000 handicap at Doncaster and is rated 89. As nice a filly as we saw in the whole sales season, with terrific re-sale value, she is an absolute “must buy” if funds allow at £29,650 (plus VAT) per share.
